Terence Stamp, who perhaps most famously starred as General Zod in “Superman” and “Superman II,” died Sunday morning. He was 87.

Stamp’s death was confirmed by his family. “He leaves behind an extraordinary body of work, both as an actor and as a writer that will continue to touch and inspire people for years to come,” the family said in a statement. “We ask for privacy at this sad time.”

Stamp was initially interested in pursuing a career in advertising, but landed a scholarship for a drama school instead. He made his cinematic debut in 1962’s “Billy Budd.”

The decade was an especially iconic span of time for Stamp, who was one-half of a golden couple alongside Julie Christie and also starred in “Far From The Madding Crowd” and “The Collector.” But he left performing at the end of the decade without knowing if he would ever return.

Eventually, Stamp made his way back to acting years later. In addition to “Superman,” he found roles in “Wall Street,” “The Hit,” “Star Wars: Episode I,” “Red Planet,” “Bowfinger” and others.

Stamp reflected on “Billy Budd” while speaking to NPR’s Terry Gross in 2021. At the time he and Michael Caine — just “two young, out-of-work actors” — were roommates. “And although Michael Caine wasn’t known – you know, he hadn’t been just discovered; he was absolutely unknown – he did know a lot about the technicalities of filming. And so he kind of versed me in those, so I knew the technicalities and felt confident in that,” Stamp said.

You know, I knew how to hit marks. I knew about sort of camera angles. I knew about lenses. And frankly, when I started the movie, a kind of amazing thing happened because I just discovered that – it was like I knew it. It was as though it was absolutely second nature to me.”

Stamp earned an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe for his performance.

Terence Stamp was born in 1938 in Stepney, London. He very nearly played James Bond after Sean Connery died but ultimately believed his thoughts about how the role should be performed didn’t match those of producer Harry Saltzman’s.

In addition to working as an actor, Stamp was also the author of three memoirs, a novel, and a cookbook.

He married for the first time in 2002 when he wed Elizabeth O’Rourke, who was 29 at the time. The pair divorced in 2008.

Dan Tana, Owner of Celebrated LA Restaurant, Dies at 90 https://www.thewrap.com/dan-tana-owner-of-celebrated-la-restaurant-dies-at-90/ Sat, 16 Aug 2025 23:44:15 +0000 https://www.thewrap.com/?p=7821148 Though his career began with 1957's "The Enemy Below," the eatery became his life's work after it opened in 1964

The post Dan Tana, Owner of Celebrated LA Restaurant, Dies at 90 appeared first on TheWrap.

Dan Tana, the actor who opened the iconic Dan Tana restaurant in 1964, has died. He was 90.

The news was announced by the restaurant’s social media team on Facebook.

“The great Dan Tana has passed on. We all know that he created a very magical place. Our beloved little yellow house will forever feel his presence,” a statement shared on the platform began.

“Dan started out working for La Scala and The Villa Capri in the 1950s. It was working for those classic eateries that encouraged him to open his own! And he did just that. He was always proud of where he came from and what he accomplished, a former soccer star from Yugoslavia.”

“Dan had wonderful stories about Marilyn Monroe, Joe DiMaggio, James Dean, Frank Sinatra, and Sammy Davis. In fact Robert Urich’s character was named after Dan Tana on the classic TV show, ‘Vega$.'”

“Today Dan Tana’s is owned by his dear friend Sonja Perencevic who’s kept it exactly the same since 1964,” the statement concluded. “This man is a legend, and as you know a legend never dies.”

Tana’s cinematic career kicked off with 1957’s “The Enemy Below.” He also had roles in “The Untouchables,” “Rin Tin Tin” and “Peter Gunn.”

Tana was born Dobrivoje Tanasijević in Čibutkovica, Danube Banovina, then a province of the Kingdom of Yugoslaviaon, on May 26, 1935. He initially pursued athletics and even played professional soccer in Canada before moving to Hollywood, where he began taking acting lessons.

Tana changed his name to make it more palatable to American audiences and landed the role in “The Enemy Below.” He began working in restaurants, first as a dishwasher at Patsy D’Amore’s Villa Capri in Hollywood, to supplement his income.

He took over a hamburger stand in 1964 and refashioned it into an Italian restaurant. The Los Angeles Times reviewed the restaurant and helped put it on the map; by the ’80s, the Times wrote the establishment was “the restaurant of choice” for anyone who wanted to be “seen in All The Right Places.”

Tana never lost his interest in soccer, and simultaneously became manager of the Los Angeles Toros in the 1960s, chaired an English team, and operated several soccer clubs throughout Belgrade.

He sold the restaurant to Sonja Perenčević in 2009 and moved to Serbia. In 2014 he told the Hollywood Reporter Perenčević had made good on her pledge to keep the restaurant exactly the same, and perhaps most importantly, “We are still serving my original customers — and their children and grandchildren.”

Ronald “Ronnie” Rondell Jr., the Hollywood stuntman who was set on fire while shaking hands for the cover of Pink Floyd’s 1975 album “Wish You Were Here,” died Tuesday, August 12. He was 88.

Rondell’s death was announced by his family.

Rondell grew up in Hollywood, and his father worked as an extra and then an assistant director on “The Jack Benny Show” and “Around the World in 80 Days.” Rondell’s own career also included performing stunts in “The Matrix Reloaded” and “Twister.”

He’d been “doing a lot of fire work” when he was hired for the cover shoot, Rondell said in the 2012 documentary “Pink Floyd: The Story of Wish You Were Here,” and he “had the special suits and all this stuff for fully enveloped fire.”

The shoot itself was straightforward, he added. “But a partial is basically pretty safe, pretty easy one to do, in most cases.”

Having said that, Rondell, who wore a fire-retardant layer underneath his business suit, ended up losing half his mustache. “There’s a funny thing about fire,” he said. “When it gets in your face, you’re going to move.”

Ultimately, the shoot was just another day in the life of a stunt performer.

“It was pretty easy to do, not too life threatening, and paid well,” Rondell concluded.

He spent several years working as a stuntman and also as a stunt coordinator and a director before starting his own company, Stunts Unlimited, in 1970.

“Our hearts are heavy with the loss of the last of Stunts Unlimited’s 3 esteemed founding fathers, Ronnie Rondell,” the company wrote in a message shared on Facebook.

“In a class all his own, Ronnie was a generous mentor whose talents set the bar for every aspiring stunt person. He was deeply respected, admired and loved. Ronnie was not just a legend, he was legendary and will be deeply missed.”

“The family requests that we all respect their privacy at this time and hold off on phone calls or posts until they are able to share details for honoring his life and legacy. – RA Rondell and Family,” the message concluded.

He is survived by his wife Mary Rondell, his son R.A. Rondell; his grandchildren Brandon Rondell, Rachel Rondell, and Dalton Rondell, his great-grandchild Rocco Rondell, and his brother Ric Rondell.

Dan Ziskie, the character actor known for his recurring roles in prestige TV dramas like “House of Cards” and “Treme,” died Monday, July 21, in New York at the age of 80.

The Detroit native passed away from arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease, his family announced. He is survived by his wife Cynthia, brother David, his nephews Jesse, Austin and Brett and their six children.

“It is with heavy hearts that our family announces that our beloved Daniel has passed away,” Ziskie’s loved ones wrote Friday on his personal Instagram page. The actor’s family promised to make another post in the future sharing details about a forthcoming memorial service for Ziskie in New York City.

Born on August 13, 1944, in Detroit, Ziskie was a track and field and football star in high school and college. It was during his time at the University of Michigan that he began pursuing his passion for the arts, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, before joining the legendary Second City improv theater troupe in Chicago. In the years that followed, Ziskie turned in memorable performances on both the stage and screen.

On Broadway, he starred in productions of “After the Fall” and “I’m Not Rappaport.” In the mid and late ’80s, he scored some of his first film roles in beloved Hollywood comedies like “Adventures in Babysitting,” “Troop Beverly Hills” and the Robert Altman-directed “O.C. and Stiggs.” He went on to have roles decades later in Charlie Kaufman’s “Synecdoche, New York” and the Will Smith-starring 2015 NFL drama “Concussion.”

Ziskie is, perhaps, best known though for playing C.J. Liguori, a well-connected banker, in HBO’s post-Hurricane Katrina New Orleans drama “Treme” from creators David Simon and Eric Overmyer, which ran for four seasons from 2010 to 2013. He also memorably portrayed Vice President Jim Matthews in the first and fifth seasons of Netflix’s “House of Cards.”

In addition to his work as an actor, Ziskie was also a passionate photographer. In Oct. 2017, he released his first photo book, “Cloud Chamber,” which consisted of photographs he’d captured in the New York City area from 2013 to 2016.

Danielle Spencer, the former child actress best known for her role as sassy tween Dee Thomas on the groundbreaking sitcom “What’s Happening!!,” died Monday after battling cancer for several years. She was 60.

The news was made public by her friend and former co-star, actor Haywood Nelson, who wrote on Instagram, “Brilliance! It comes in a great many forms. We all have them and we all have this family’s – Dr. Danielle Spencer (June 24, 1965 – August 11, 2025). Dr. Dee, our brilliant, loving, positive, pragmatic warrior, without fail, has finally found her release from the clutches of this world and a body. We celebrate Danielle Spencer and her contributions as we regret to inform her departure and transition from a long battle with cancer.”

“We have lost a daughter, sister, family member, ‘What’s Happening’ cast member, veterinarian animal rights proponent and healer, and cancer heroine. Our Shero. Danielle is loved. She will be missed in this form and forever embraced,” Nelson concluded.

Born in Trenton, New Jersey in 1965 and raised in New York City, Spencer started acting in elementary school, taking lessons from age 8. At age 11, she landed her big break as Dee Thomas, younger sister of main character Roger (Ernest Thomas) on “What’s Happening.” Loosely based on the hit movie “Cooley High,” the series was a groundbreaking hit that among other things was possibly the first majority Black TV show to focus on teenage characters.

Though popular for most of its run, the show’s producers chose to cancel the show after Season 3 in 1979, due to a dispute with two of the lead actors over compensation. Spencer, 14 at the time, took time off from acting and eventually enrolled at the University of California, Davis, where she studied marine biology.

Meanwhile, “What’s Happening!!” performed exceptionally well in syndication during the early 1980s and in 1985 it was revived with “What’s Happening Now.” Spencer returned on a recurring bases as Dee Thomas while continuing to attend college. “What’s Happening Now” was canceled after 3 seasons, at which time Spencer retired from acting and focused on her education, earning a doctorate in veterinary medicine from Tuskegee University in 1996.

She later wrote a well-regarded memoir of her experiences as a child actor, “Through the Fire: Journal of a Child Star,” published in 2011.

Spencer was married twice, first to Garry Fields from 1999 to 2013. She married David L. David in 2014, though it’s unclear if they remained married at the time of her death.

In her last decade she fought a multi-front battle with cancer: she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014, and had been fighting stomach cancer at the time of her death.

Bobby Whitlock, founding member of Derek and the Dominos whose soulful keyboard and vocals shaped the band’s only album, “Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs,” and whose session work is heard on records by George Harrison, Eric Clapton and the Rolling Stones, has died. He was 77.

Following a brief illness, Whitlock died early Sunday morning in his Texas home surrounded by family and friends, his manager confirmed to multiple media outlets.

Whitlock grew up immersed in the Southern soul scene, becoming the first white artist signed to Stax Records. He recorded as a teen with acts including Sam & Dave and Booker T. & the M.G.’s, later joining Delaney & Bonnie and Friends, a loose collective of touring musicians that included Clapton, Carl Radle and Jim Gordon.

In 1970 the foursome formed Derek and the Dominos in 1970, releasing their only studio album that year. Though met with modest sales, the record — featuring the title track “Layla” — would go on to be regarded as one of rock’s landmark works. The group disbanded in 1971 amid personal struggles and the death of guitarist Duane Allman.

Whitlock’s session work included contributions to George Harrison’s “All Things Must Pass,” Dr. John’s “The Sun, Moon & Herbs,” Doris Troy’s self-titled album and uncredited – but key – passages on the Rolling Stones’ seminal “Exile on Main St. He also released four solo albums in the 1970s before stepping away from the industry.

Whitlock was also a prolific songwriter — he co-wrote half of Layla’s original tracks, including “Bell Bottom Blues” and “Tell the Truth” — and his compositions have been recorded by artists from Sheryl Crow to Derek Trucks.

In the 1990s, Whitlock returned to recording and frequently collaborated with his wife, CoCo Carmel. He reunited with Clapton in 2000 for a televised performance of “Bell Bottom Blues.”

Jim Lovell, the naval aviator and mechanical engineer who is most famous for commanding the space mission Apollo 13 safely back to Earth after mechanical issues led to an aborted moon landing in 1970, died Thursday in Lake Forrest Illinois. He was 97 years old.

NASA Administrator Sean Duffy shared the news of Lovell’s death on Friday in a special tribute.

“NASA sends its condolences to the family of Capt. Jim Lovell, whose life and work inspired millions of people across the decades,” Duffy wrote on NASA’s official website. “Jim’s character and steadfast courage helped our nation reach the Moon and turned a potential tragedy into a success from which we learned an enormous amount. We mourn his passing even as we celebrate his achievements.”

Lovell also co-authored the 1994 nonfiction account of the Apollo 13 space launch, “Lost Moon: The Perilous Voyage of Apollo 13.” That book with Jeffrey Kluger served as the source material for Ron Howard’s Oscar-winning “Apollo 13” in 1995, starring Tom Hanks as Lovell.

Duffy’s tribute went on to celebrate Lovell’s slew of accolades, including his history-making missions like the Apollo 13 assignment that nearly cost him and his crew members Fred Haise and Jack Swigert their lives. The mission’s film adaptation co-starred Bill Paxton as Haise and Kevin Bacon as Swigert. Lovell made an appearance in the film.

“From a pair of pioneering Gemini missions to the successes of Apollo, Jim helped our nation forge a historic path in space that carries us forward to upcoming Artemis missions to the Moon and beyond,” the message continued, adding that Lovell was known for his “wit” and funny comebacks.

“As the Command Module Pilot for Apollo 8, Jim and his crewmates became the first to lift off on a Saturn V rocket and orbit the Moon, proving that the lunar landing was within our reach,” Duffy wrote. “As commander of the Apollo 13 mission, his calm strength under pressure helped return the crew safely to Earth and demonstrated the quick thinking and innovation that informed future NASA missions.”

Lovell was born on March 25, 1928, in Cleveland, Ohio. He attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison and went on to graduate from the United States Naval Academy in 1952. Before his Apollo missions, Lovell flew to space on two Gemini tasks, Gemini 7 and Gemini 12. He later became the first person to fly into space four times with his Apollo 8 and Apollo 13 missions.

His decorated career earned him the Congressional Space Medal of Honor and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Duffy closed out his message saying that Lovell will always be remembered for embodying “the bold resolve and optimism of both past and future explorers, and we will remember him always.”

Brandon Blackstock, a talent manager and most notably the ex-husband of Kelly Clarkson, has died at age 48 after a three-year battle with cancer.

“It is with great sadness that we share the news that Brandon Blackstock has passed away,” a rep for the family told People, which first broke the news Thursday. “Brandon bravely battled cancer for more than three years. He passed away peacefully and was surrounded by family. We thank you for your thoughts and prayers and ask everyone to respect the family’s privacy during this very difficult time.”

Clarkson revealed that her ex-husband and the father of her two children was ill Wednesday when she postponed the remainder of her Las Vegas residency to spend time with their kids, River, 11, and Remington, 9. The shows have been postponed to July and August 2026.

“While I normally keep my personal life private, this past year, my children’s father has been ill,” she wrote. “And at this moment I need to be fully present for them.”

Narvel Blackstock, a producer and manager formerly married to Reba MEntire, originally served as Clarkson’s manager and introduced her to his son, Brandon. The couple married in 2013. Clarkson’s emotional 2015 ballad “Piece by Piece” was inspired by the couple’s at-the-time stable love.

Blackstock also managed country stars Blake Shelton and Carly Pearce. He worked for his father’s firm, Starstruck Entertainment.

Once married, Blackstock became Clarkson’s manager. Clarkson ultimately filed for divorce from him after seven years of marriage in 2020, which they finalized in 2022.

Clarkson took a break from her talk show earlier this year, citing personal reasons, which now seem to be connected with Blackstock’s cancer battle.

He is survived by his father Narvel, his sons Seth and Remington, daughters Savannah and River, grandson Lake and siblings Shelby, Shawna and Chassidy.
